ONGOING

Through May 16: Sports physicals for West Plains High School students will be held during regular school hours. The Zizzer Athletic Department and coaches will communicate information about times with teams. Parents of students who did not participate in sports this school year should schedule an appointment with the Zizzer Clinic, 1013 College St., by calling 417-505-7123.

Through May 17: The Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce office is closed as it relocates from Jefferson Avenue to 397 Jackie D. Garrett Drive (the former Greater Ozarks Center for Advanced Technology).

Through June 30 (8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) Angela Bullard’s artwork will be featured on the first floor of OzSBI, 408 Washington Ave., in an exhibit sponsored through a partnership between the incubator and the West Plains Council on the Arts. The show is an eclectic assortment of Bullard’s work, from needle-felted landscapes to encaustic florals to acrylic abstracts.

Through June 30 (9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays) The West Plains Council on the Arts partners with the West Plains Public Library, 750 @ W. Broadway to bring art to the community. Photography from Marc Brannan will be on display.

TODAY

May 15 (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) OzSBI, 408 Washington Ave., will host a workshop, Excel for Business Part 2, presented by Gene Weinback for those who want to learn how to navigate and use advanced features of Microsoft Excel 2021, including PivotTables and PivotCharts. May 15 (10 a.m. to noon) Twin Pines Conservation Education Center in Winona will host a watercolor painting session and discussion focused on the brown-headed nuthatch. May 15 (6-8 p.m.) S&S Skateland, 1649 U.S. 160, will hold a fundraiser event for Hammond Mill Bible Camp. Cost to skate is $8. Concessions and merchandise will also be available for purchase.

THURSDAY

May 16 (2:30-4 p.m.) The Missouri Job Center will host a hiring event for the public at 408 Washington Ave., Suite 100. FRIDAY

May 17-18 and 20-21: Missouri State University-West Plains’ University/Community Programs will host two lifeguard courses at the civic center pool for those who would like to work at that pool or the West Plains Aquatic Center outdoors. May 17 (9 a.m. to noon) MSU-WP Grizzly Softball will hold a one-day skills camp to run defensive drills and focus on pitching fundamentals, base running, infield and outfield skills and hitting fundamentals at the West Plains City Softball Complex. Youth in grades 1-4 will attend from 9-10 a.m.; 5-8, 9:30-11 a.m.; and high school, 10:30 a.m. to noon. May 17 (4-5:30 p.m.) A Meet-the-Artist event will be hosted in the civic center for artists participating in Ozarks Healthcare BHC’s annual art show centered around Mental Health Awareness Month.

May 17 (5-9 p.m.) & 18 (11 a.m.-9 p.m.) The Give Local First Kansas City Barbeque Society BBQ Festival will be held at the Heart of the Ozarks Fairgrounds. Benefiting the West Plains Elks Lodge 2418 Veterans Program, the event features food trucks, a Kid Zone, vendor booths, and several contests include a hot wing eating contest and several cooking competitions. A battle of the bands will be held, and live music will also be performed by Isaac Kenneth Band and Southern Edge Band. May 18 (9 a.m.) The Homeland Cemetery Association will have a workday at the cemetery on County Road 6310 off of West U.S. 160.

May 18 (9 a.m.) Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1218 will hold a “Flying Start” program to offer information about learning to fly at the chapter’s hangar, 810 Bryan St. in Willow Springs. May 18 (10 a.m.) The Fulton County Fair Spring Junior Livestock Show will be held at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Salem, Ark. All junior exhibitors are eligible to show beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Arkansas health regulations must be met. Online entries open April 1. May 18 (2-4 p.m.) The United Federated Republican Women will host Politics in the Park at the People’s Park pavilion on West Broadway. It will be a meet-and-greet event for candidates running for office. Tea and lemonade will be available.

May 18 (5:30 p.m.) The Howell County Lincoln Day will be held in the exhibit hall of the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from many of the Republican candidates running for state office. Registration begins at 5:30, followed at 6 by dinner and a program. Tickets are $30 each and may be purchased from Republican Committee members John Williams, Jim and Lisa Brassfield, Judy Von Allmen, Tracy and Rick Brazier in Willow Springs/Pomona, and Nick and Nancy Heaven in Mtn. View, as well as any county officeholder or at the door. A live auction will be conducted by Billy Sexton, and a silent auction will also be held.

June 4-7 (8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) Ozarka College, 218 College Drive, Melbourne, Ark., will host Kids College for students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Tuition is $80 and includes refreshments, a T-shirt and student ID. An application form may be found at ozarka.edu.

June 7-8 (10 a.m.-9 p.m.) The 30th annual Old-Time Music, Ozarks Heritage Festival will take place in downtown West Plains. Headliner Big Smith will perform at 8 p.m. June 8, with other performers on both days including Creek Rocks, Creek Stink, Dusty James & Abalone Pearl, Echoes of Dogwood Mountain, Julie Henigan, Duane Porterfield, Shortleaf Band, Seth Shumate, Lyal Strickland and Stringfield. Admission is free.

June 8 (8 a.m. to noon) The Eleven Point Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest will host a youth fishing day at Ripley Lake for children ages 2 to 15. Fishing licenses not required, but size and daily limits apply. Door prizes will be given to the first 50 kids. Limited fishing gear will be available; participants are encouraged to bring their own gear and bait. Facepainting, games, crafts, presentations and activities will be available and staff will be on hand to assist with fishing techniques and instructions. Participants should bring their own food and drinks. From Doniphan: Take U.S. 160 west 9 miles to C Highway, turn right and travel about a mile, then turn right onto Forest Road 3240 at the entrance sign. Continue another mile to the day-use area.

June 15-16 (noon to dark): The West Plains Pride committee will host a Pride event at Galloway Park, 2183 County Road 1770, with booths and entertainment for all ages to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. All are invited to attend and celebrate differences between people within the community and promote equal rights for all.

June 17-28 (7 a.m.-4 p.m.) Ozarks Healthcare will officer sports physicals for area kindergarten through eighth grade students on weekdays at the Zizzer Clinic, 1013 College St. Walk-ins are available but appointments are encouraged. July 4: The Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Willow Springs Police Department, will host the second annual “I Ran from the Cops” 5K and SWAT challenge ahead of the traditional Fourth of July parade. Details to be announced.

Covered are basic resuscitation skills for use on an infant. Dec. 7: The Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce will host Pancakes with Santa and a slew of other Downtown Holli-Day events, concluding with a lighted Christmas parade. Details to be announced.

Dec. 10 (8-11 a.m.) Ozarks Healthcare will offer low-cost lab screenings including those for blood sugar levels, cholesterol, thyroid function, calcium levels, diabetes, prostate cancer and vitamin D levels.
