The Missouri State University-West Plains math department, along with the Math Educators of South Central Missouri (MESCM), conducted its annual Middle School Math Relays on Jan. 27.
More than 120 students from seven area schools competed in the event.
Points were awarded for first through fifth places in a total of 20 grade-specific individual competitions. In addition, a team round was held with the winning teams earning additional points for their respective school teams.
The top three schools in terms of collective points earned were Ozarks Christian Academy (OCA), first place; West Plains Middle School, second place; and Richards Elementary, third place.
Fifth grade: Myles Hibler and Dean Pasciak-Thomas, West Plains Middle School, and Maddilyn Collins, Richards.
Sixth grade: Clayton Deal, Richards; Paul Sander, OCA; and Jacob Hudson, Richards.

All proceeds from the event are used to fund an annual scholarship for an MSU-WP student majoring in mathematics or mathematics education.
MESCM expressed appreciation to the many area teachers and parents who made the contest possible by proctoring and/or grading tests and performing many other necessary duties.
