Posted

The Lincoln School is set to welcome former West Plains resident Beverly Short for a captivating two-day event featuring a book discussion and a theatrical performance. The events will showcase her multi-faceted career and her latest artistic achievements.

At 5 p.m. on May 10, Short will engage with the community during a discussion and signing of her book, "Newlywed Widow," at the Lincoln School, 1400 E. Pony Thomas St. The event aims to offer fans and readers a chance to delve into the personal stories and inspirations behind her writing.

The following evening, May 11, Short will take the stage at the Avenue Theatre, 307 Washington Ave., to perform her one-woman play based on the novel. This performance not only highlights her talent but also marks a significant return to her roots in theater, which began in her years at West Plains High School.

Short's journey into the arts started humbly at the Tuscaloosa Children’s Theatre in Alabama, where she once played a sack of flour. Her passion for performance grew during her time at West Plains High School, where she starred in memorable roles such as Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker” and Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” Beyond the stage, Short was also an active participant in various school activities including the gymnastics and tennis teams, as well as the yearbook staff.

After graduating in 1976, Short's ambitions led her to Murray State University in Kentucky to pursue a degree in speech and theater. However, her path took a dramatic turn, bringing her to California where her career expanded into roles in national sports teams and Hollywood. Her credits include working alongside notable actors and securing a significant role in the CBS daytime drama, "CAPITOL."

Short's artistic endeavors continued to evolve as she took on diverse roles in the entertainment industry, from a stand-up comic to a camera operator. Recently, she has also thrived as a Licensed Clinical Massage therapist and a producer, director and star of her own one-woman show in Los Angeles.

Her book, "Newlywed Widow," is not only a reflection of her personal journey but also a foundation for her latest project — a musical adaptation of her autobiography, set to begin this summer.

Officials with the Lincoln School and the Avenue Theatre say they are proud to host Short for the special homecoming. Tickets for her play on May 11 are priced at $15 and can be purchased online at theavenuetheatre.org/buy-tickets.
