Beginning at 9 a.m. daily through Wednesday, the Mtn. View Garden Club is hosting its annual Swag Workshop at the Mtn. View Community Center on First Street. ”With the help of both young and old, 80 of these beautiful evergreen decorations are created and then hung by our city workers throughout the city for everyone's enjoyment during the Christmas season,” said Robi Tanner with the club. This morning, club and community members first met to cover the hall floor with tarps and set up work tables, then began making 5-foot-tall decorations. They expected to work until about 4 or 5, said Tanner, and will resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The swag assembly will continue Wednesday, and the day will be ended by cleaning the community center. Volunteers are fed a “hot and hearty lunch,” said Tanner, and any time given is appreciated. Those wishing to help are asked to bring gloves, scissors, pruners and pliers, labeled with the owner’s name. For more information, call Tanner at 573-292-3000.

Black River Technical College’s (BRTC) Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA) in Pocahontas, Ark., held its Fall 2023 graduation ceremony Nov. 9 for the 33 officers who completed the Basic Police Training Course, including a cadet from Cherokee Village, Ark., who earned special recognition. more

Hayden Green of West Plains, a first-year student at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., was recently honored with the Dr. William R. Jackson, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship award. The award recognizes an optometry student from Missouri who had a competitive undergraduate grade point average, Optometry Admission Test score, admissions interview and extracurricular activities. It comes with an annual scholarship of $5,000 over the course of the four-year doctorate program. Green is the son of Chris and Amy Green. His grandparents are Marvin and Louanna Little and Doug Parrish. He is a graduate of University of Missouri and West Plains High School.  Each year, said officials, Southern College of Optometry recognizes its most outstanding first-year students with scholarships to help defray the costs of their education in pursuit of their Doctor of Optometry degrees. For the 2023-24 academic school year, the college awarded first-year scholarships to 94 students, representing 90.3% of the entering class. The scholarship total awarded to first-year students this year surpassed $960,000, the highest in the school’s 91-year history.

The West Plains RV-II School District announces George Fisher has been nominated for the Missouri School Board Association's John T. Belcher Scholarship. The prestigious award honors exemplary students with a $1,000 scholarship in each of MSBA's 17 regions, with consideration given to academic achievement, extracurricular involvement and essay excellence. As a regional winner, Fisher is also in contention for the statewide scholarship, which grants an additional $1,500 to the chosen recipient. The West Plains School District Board of Education extends heartfelt congratulations to Fisher on this distinguished nomination.

On Nov. 7, the Willow Springs chapter of the National Honors Society held an induction ceremony at the Grimes Auditorium on the Willow Springs High School campus, welcoming 10 students from the high school were inducted as new members. The guest speaker for the ceremony was Willow Springs Superintendent Dr. Marty Spence. Members were selected by the chapter’s faculty council for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Students inducted are senior Allie Martin and juniors Sophia Barrett, Kristen Buster, Will Clarkston, Hynlie Johnson, Jackson Lee, Everett Smith, Mary Spencer, Heidi Wehmer and Emma Wiles. They join current members Isabella Autrey, Tate Cochran, Luke Mansfield, Alex Moritz, Allison Pearson, Madalyn Poor, Emma Spence and Melaina Wilson. The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students with chapters in more than 16,000 high schools. Since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership.
