The Bikers United nonprofit group of West Plains recently dissolved, and to zero out the organization’s finances, members decided to go out in a big way and make donations to other local nonprofits, including a $3,393.70 contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater West Plains Area. BGC CEO Elizabeth Cawthon said the club will use the funds to help finish off a kitchen remodel at the club, in order to feed evening meals to club members. The kitchen is also used to help prepare meals fed to community children during the summer "Meet Up & Eat Up," which provides free lunches to all children while school is out. WP R-7 School Board meets Tuesday
Members of the West Plains R-7 School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library with a closed session, followed by an open session at about 5:30. The meeting is being held a week earlier than usual to avoid holding it during the following week's Thanksgiving break. more

Motorcyclist killed in 3-vehicle crash

&ldquo;Not sure what his name was, but we call him Martin,&rdquo; said West Plains Regional Animal Shelter volunteer Trish Hammen, introducing this wayward pooch to the community. &ldquo;He was found walking in the middle of the highway. A good Samaritan stopped and picked him up.&nbsp;He was very skinny and hungry. He has since gained some weight and is learning to trust people.&rdquo;&nbsp;Shelter volunteers are not sure what breeds he is mixed with, but speculate he may be part red heeler or pit bull terrier. Martin is believed to be around 1 year old and will be neutered soon. The fee to adopt is $50. Prospective adopters are invited to drop by the shelter on BB Highway in West Plains or call 417-256-8438.
WPRAS annual fundraiser auction raises $3K toward building completion
The Oct. 28 annual West Plains Regional Animal Shelter Volunteer and Friends Fall/Winder Dinner and Silent Auction raised about $3,000, including contributions from businesses donating money before the event to support the shelter’s efforts. more

Retired Army National Guard Brigadier General Mike Pace, West Plains, served as the grand marshal for this year's Veterans Day parade, held Friday in downtown West Plains. During his military career, Pace earned many distinctive honors, and at one point was the joint force land component commander, in operations control commanding all Army units of the Missouri National Guard. He is a Bronze Star recipient who retired from military service in 2008, and during his service also was employed for about 33 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, achieving the rank of major and retiring as director of the criminal investigation bureau in Jefferson City. He is being driven along the parade route by the owner of the classic Camaro in which he is riding, Tillman Durham. Watch Wednesday's Quill for more parade pictures.

Local veterans, including a group of Marines at left, salute the American flag during the singing of the &quot;Star Spangled Banner&quot; by the West Plains High School Concert Choir. An assembly was held Friday morning at the high school to honor veterans following a breakfast sponsored by the school district and served by members of the high school Student Council.

Student Council members at West Plains High School served a Veterans Day breakfast to veterans and their families Friday morning in the high school cafeteria. American flag cookies were also served and middle school Student Council members made treat bags and penned notes thanking veterans for their service. WPHS StuCo serves breakfast to veterans
The back wheels of a trailer attached to a semiatruck overturned during a sharp turn at about 8 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of West Thornburgh Street and Lincoln Avenue in West Plains, dumping some of its load and blocking traffic at the intersection. The cab and front wheels of the trailer remained upright, and no injuries were reported for the driver, who was making a delivery to the Armstrong Flooring lumber yard a few blocks north of the intersection, off of Abe Taylor Street. Hughes Towing helped with stabilizing the trailer while West Plains police officers directed traffic around the intersection. Meanwhile the dumped lumber was offloaded while waiting for another trailer to come pick up the load.
