Current and former Wisconsin athletes talked about mental health and the need for athletes to communicate and seek assistance during a panel discussion on sports and mental health. The discussion took place three weeks after the death of Wisconsin cross country and track runner Sarah Shulze, but had been scheduled beforehand. Shulze’s family announced last month that the 21-year-old took her own life on April 13. Shulze is one of three Division I athletes who took their lives over the past two months. more
College football coaches are pushing for changes to NCAA rules to help stabilize rosters depleted by transfers. The proposals would lift the yearly cap on how many players a school can sign and create designated windows in which a player must enter the transfer portal to retain immediate eligibility. Support for the changes is gaining ‘momentum.' Todd Berry, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, says the changes would help bring some order to what has become a chaotic time in college football. Berry says the coaches’ proposal would scrap the current cap that limits schools to signing 25 players per year. Those players can be either high school recruits or transfers. The overall scholarship cap of 85 would remain in place. more
Pittsburgh wide receiver Jordan Addison is exploring his options. The rising junior and 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner as the nation’s top receiver is in the NCAA transfer portal. Addison put in his paperwork by the May 1 deadline. The decision comes amid reports that Addison is considering USC as a potential destination. Addison caught a single-season school record 100 passes for 1,593 yards and 17 touchdowns for the ACC champions last fall. more
Akok Akok is transferring to Georgetown from UConn to play men's basketball. It is the latest in a series of additions and subtractions for coach Patrick Ewing’s Hoyas after the worst season in Big East history. Georgetown announced Akok's move on Tuesday. The team went 6-25 last season, including 0-19 in conference play, and ended on a 21-game losing streak. Ewing has led the Hoyas to one season above .500 during his five in the job. He received a public show of support from athletic director Lee Reed on March 2. Akok is a 6-foot-9 forward who spent the past three years at UConn. more
Michigan State has hired hockey coach Adam Nightingale. The former player for the Spartans led USA Hockey’s development program for two years and was a Detroit Red Wings assistant for a season. Athletic director Alan Haller made the announcement Tuesday. Nightingale replaces Danton Cole after he was 58-101-12 over five seasons. Haller says Nightingale has a passion for the school and the program and has a strong combination of skill development, player development and recruiting ties” more
