This week, the Quill learned of a possible scam related to the results of the recent 2023 Best of West Plains contest, published in the March 30 issue of the Quill’s West Plains Gazette.
A local business received a phone call from a number with an 888 area code, and the employee who answered spoke with someone either claiming or implying affiliation with the West Plains Daily Quill, offering a plaque with their award on it for $199.
The caller named the Best of West Plains contest specifically and knew the name of the category the business won, suggesting they likely gathered the information online.
The results were released in a printed special section on March 30, and online in a digital e-Edition soon after.
Neither the Quill nor parent company Phillips Media Group are affiliated with such an offer, and award certificates began being distributed on Thursday to those businesses that won awards, at no charge.
