March 22 (5:30 p.m.) Howell County Lincoln Day will begin with registration in the Magnolia Room at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis Street. Dinner and the program will follow at 6. Guest speaker is Aaron Door, an activist with the Missouri Firearms Coalition. District 33 Sen. Brad Hudson, 154th District Rep. Lisa Durnell and 153rd District Rep. Keith Elliott will also speak. A fundraiser auction will be hosted by Billy Sexton. Aug. 15 (8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) The Howell County Hay School workshop planned for Feb. 21 has been rescheduled by the University of Missouri Extension due to weather. Oct. 3 (10 a.m.) The Spring River Gem & Mineral Club will meet at Thunderbird Center, 62 N. Lakeshore Road, Cherokee Village, Ark. Dr. Bari Hanafi, assistant geology professor at University of Arkansas-Little Rock will present “Rock Salt: Studying Squeeze Rocks.” Rock salt is a unique type of rock that can flow like a liquid in response to geological stress.
Oct. 17-18: The Ozarks Heritage Festival celebration of traditional Ozarks music and arts will be held in downtown West Plains.
Nov. 7 (10 a.m.) The Spring River Gem & Mineral Club will meet at Thunderbird Center, 62 N. Lakeshore Road, Cherokee Village, Ark. Geologist Mike Howard will present “Exploring Flourescence,” complete with a light show of fluorescent minerals.
