ONGOING

Through Dec. 10: The West Plains Optimist Club invites children in first through eighth grades to submit entries into its Substance Abuse Prevention Poster Contest. Posters should select a phrase from the “Just Say No” pledge and design their poster around that phrase, including the words. TODAY

Nov. 8 (8 a.m. to noon) Ozarks Healthcare offers Prepared Childbirth classes, recommended for new parents in the second trimester of pregnancy. Classes are free to parents planning to deliver at OZH Women’s Center, or for those planing to deliver elsewhere, a one-time $75 fee to attend one or all classes will be charged. Classes are held in the Women’s Center Education Room, 1100 Kentucky Ave. Tours will be offered after classes for interested parents.

Nov. 8 (9 a.m. to noon) The local chapters of the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution invite the community to a free “Finding Your Patriot” genealogy workshop at the American Legion, 1401 Bill Virdon Blvd. Bring a tablet or laptop, notepad and pencils and any genealogy documents such as obituaries or birth and death certificates. Nov. 8 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.: The Thomasville Christmas Bazaar is underway at the Thomasville Community Center, 134 Old St. In-house Christmas decor, centerpieces and other hand-crafted and commercially produced items will be for sale. A Christmas-themed queen size quilt will be given away at the conclusion of the event. Dessert, baked foods, soup and chili will be offered. Nov. 8 (11 a.m.) Willow Springs High School senior Josh Wiese is organizing the first ever Veterans Day to be held in downtown Willow Springs as a senior project. All floats should be themed to honor American veterans, and all groups, businesses and churches are invited to participate. Lineup starts at 10 a.m. at the high school student parking lot. Nov. 8 (6:30 p.m.) The West Plains Area Dugout Club will host Trivia Night at the Missouri State University-West Plains Recreation Center, 323 W. Trish Knight St. Topics will include history, geography, movies and sports. The cost is $25 per player or reserve a table for up to eight players for $175. SUNDAY

Nov. 9 (10 a.m.) Cloud 9 Chapel will host a special bluegrass gospel music performance by Kirby Clark and Roy Bond. Pastor Darrell Trantham and the congregation welcome all to attend. An offering will be received. The chapel is located at Cloud 9 Ranch Club on U.S. 160 in Caulfield, about 2 miles west of Highway 101. The entrance to the club will be on the north side of the highway.

MONDAY

Nov. 10 (7 p.m.) The Missouri State University-West Plains Community Band, under the direction of Rocky Long, invites the public to “A Musical Salute to Our Veterans” in the West Plains Civic Center Theatre, 110 St. Louis St. Admission is free and all are welcome.

TUESDAY

Nov. 11 (7:30 a.m.) West Plains High School will hold its annual veterans breakfast and assembly for all veterans, family members and the community. A complimentary breakfast will be served for veterans in the high school cafeteria, followed at 8:30 by an assembly in the gym.

Nov. 11 (11:30 a.m.) Alton High School invites the community to join them as it honors veterans and active-duty military personnel in a Veterans Day Celebration in the high school gym. Brunch, hosted by Future Business Leaders of America and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, begins at 11:30, and an assembly will be held at 1 p.m.

Nov. 11 (6 p.m.) The Ozarks Heritage Research Center will host a presentation by Carol Silvey on the Cherokee Nation at Garnett Library on West Trish Knight Street. Refreshments will be provided at the free, public event.

Nov. 12 (6:30 p.m.) The monthly meeting of the Civil War Round Table of the Ozarks will be held at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell St., Springfield. Paul Thomas will present “Union Guerrillas of Civil War Kansas: Jayhawkers and Red Legs.” Meetings are free and open to the public.

Nov. 13 (5:30-7:30 p.m.) Learn to make wreaths at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Nature Art: Wreath Making Class, held at the Ozark Regional Office, 551 Joe Jones Blvd. Conservation educator Sarah Elrod will lead the workshop using native and local plants; attendees must be 10 or older. Nov. 14 (noon to 1 p.m.) The Friends of the Garnett Library will meet at the Historic Post Office, 204 E. Main St. West Plains Council on the Arts President Kathleen Morrissey and associate history professor Dr. Jason McCollum will present a program about a grant awarded to the council and the Ozarks Heritage Research Center at MSU-WP, “The Missouri Ozarks through the lens of 250 years of history.” All are welcome. Nov. 15 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) Fun Junction and Children’s Behavioral Services will host Sensory Saturday at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. The free event offers classic games, marble races and free giveaways.

Nov. 15 (11 a.m.) The Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma organization for women who are leaders in education will meet at West Plains Country Club. The regular meeting will be preceded at 10:30 a.m. by a meeting of the executive board. The program for the regular session will be “Art with Jenni” presented by Jenni Dodson. Members should bring white elephant gifts/theme baskets for a silent auction.

Nov. 15 (5 p.m.) AMVETS Post 98, 1852 County Road 6070, will hold a pasta dinner fundraiser with live music and an auction. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 per couple. Proceeds will go to help Linda Bonnell with medical and travel expenses as she fights cancer.

All past chamber board chairs are invited to participate as grand marshals. Jan. 9-Feb 6 (8 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursdays) Ozarks Healthcare Behavior Health will host a free 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team Training at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. The program is a first-responder model for law enforcement-based crisis intervention and is open to law enforcement, first responders, mental health professionals, courts and community stakeholders. Space is limited and registration is encouraged; sign up at event.me/LxMZ0z. A five-week training is planned to begin March 2.

Jan. 22: Save the date for the 2025 Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. Nominations are underway and may be submitted online at wpchamber.com/chamber-awards.

Feb. 12 (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) The Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce and Ozarks Small Business Incubator will team up to host the inaugural Stronger Together: Ozarks Business Summit at OzSBI, 408 Washington Ave. Open to all who play a role in building the Ozarks economy, the day will include keynote speakers, breakout sessions and networking opportunities.
