W.S. church to hold Christmas in July sale

At 9 a.m. July 4, the Willow Springs Presbyterian Church will have all kinds of Christmas decorations for sale, shares Pastor Diane Cooke, inviting, “We invite you to shop for new and gently used items: angels, nutcrackers, ornaments, trees,  lights, figurines, pillows and more!”

The church is located at 210 N. Center St, behind the old Ferguson Drugstore. The sale will benefit the church’s Literacy First program. The congregation provides new books for the first graders of Willow Springs Elementary School, explained Cooke, adding each child receives at least three books of their own so they may strengthen their reading skills at home.

59th annual Vanzant Picnic set

A decades-long Douglas County tradition will take place with the 59th annual Vanzant Picnic, to be held from 6 to 10 p.m. July 11 and 12 at the Vanzant Community Center off of W Highway.

The event is sponsored by Downhome Realty and organizers say there will be plenty of entertainment, family fun and food. All are invited to bring their lawn chairs, enjoy live music each night, and eat their fill of funnel cakes, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, cobbler, and other food offered for sale.

Games for all ages include a duck pond, bingo, dart toss, dime toss, ring toss, and cake walk. There will also be door prizes and giveaways each night, and on July 12 there will also be a turtle race.

For everyone’s safety no alcohol, illicit drugs, weapons, or pets will be permitted, organizers said. Volunteers and the donation of cakes or pies for the cake walk are welcome; call or text 417-259-0954 or 417-372-1549.

To get to the community center from West Plains, take Highway 14 west to W Highway. From Ava, take Highway 14 east to Highway 95 to W Highway, and from Mtn. Grove take Highway 95 south to W Highway.
