Pedestrian Fatality

West Plains Police Chief Brian Bunch is reporting a pedestrian fatality that is being investigated.

The accident happened at 10:05 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 63 near the bridge over McFarland Drive, Bunch said, and the victim was a 50-year-old man from West Plains that was walking in the southbound lanes and was struck by a passing vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the vehicle was not hurt, Bunch added.

The man’s next-of-kin have been notified.  

Mtn. View Alumni to meet today

What organizers say could potentially be the final annual meeting of the Mtn. View Alumni Association will be held from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today in the fellowship hall of the Mtn. View First Baptist Church, 409 W. U.S. 60.

Registration starts at 11, followed by lunch at noon and a business meeting and visitation at 1:30. Alumni dues of $25 per classmate paid will cover the expenses of the meeting.

This year’s honor classes are ‘55, ‘60, ‘65 and ‘70.

Organizers note that unless volunteers step up to fill leadership positions, this may be the last meeting. All Mtn. View High School classmates and Liberty High School graduates, spouses and teachers are welcome.

Ozarks economic development program is July 15

Ozarks Heritage Research Center inside Missouri State University-West Plains’ Garnett Library, 304 W. Trish Knight St., will host a special presentation on the Ozarks Regional Commission for economic development at 6 p.m. July 15.

It will be given by historian Joe Hutchinson of Evening Shade, Ark., who will discuss the creation and ultimate downfall of the commission and Ozarks Economic Development Region from 1965 through 1981.

Discover Nature fishing classes to be held

Twin Pines Conservation Education will hold a series of four Discover Nature fishing lessons at Sims Valley, Willow Springs.

Lessons 1 and 2 will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. July 31 for ages 7 and older, with family participation encouraged. Attendees will learn the parts and function of a spin cast fishing rod and reel and how to cast safely and well, how to fasten basic tackle and catch and handle fish, and how to tie a knot and bait a hook. Supplies provided, no permit required.

Lessons 3 and 4 will be held during the same time frame on Aug. 1. Participants will learn about five common fish, their habitats and food web, and learn about fishing with lures and fishing regulations.

Supplies will be provided; no permit is required. Each participant must sign up individually.
