Missions with purpose

by Sister Warr and Sister Cecil

In Thursday’s Quill, the front page featured a story about two young ladies who are currently serving as Latter-Day Saints missionaries in the West Plains area. As a supplement, the sisters wished to provide the following as a supplement to the story to further explain the purpose of their mission, as well as the position of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints affirm that Jesus Christ is the Son of our loving Heavenly Father who was sent to be the Savior of the world. In the King James Version of the Holy Bible it states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
We know that Heavenly Father knows us individually and is always aware of us. He hears and answers our prayers and constantly has His hand stretched out wanting to lift and help us.
We believe that Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ are two separate beings and with the Holy Ghost they work together in purpose. The most sacred ordinance performed each Sabbath is when we take the sacrament and ponder Christ’s infinite atonement; Christ is the center of all we do. We follow His example, study His teachings, and strive to pattern our lives after Him.
The official Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints website states, “Members believe that Christ established His Church anciently on the “foundation of the apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 2:20; see also Ephesians 4:11–14) with “one faith, [and] one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5)”.  After Christ's death, the foundation of “one faith” became distorted and lost over time, leading to the great apostasy. The world needed a restoration of Jesus Christ's original church and we believe that the Lord's church with a living Prophet and Apostles has been restored in the latter days. That was brought forth by the prophet Joseph Smith.
Joseph Smith was a vital tool in bringing forth plain and precious truths by translating the Book of Mormon through the power of God. In the introduction of The Book of Mormon it says, “The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel”.  We believe that The Book of Mormon works hand in hand with the Holy Bible and confirms that Jesus is the Christ.
Millions of people also testify that Joseph Smith was a prophet, that a prophet and his apostles are on the earth today, and that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ. For those who read, study and pray about the Book of Mormon, they conclude that:  “The Book of Mormon is the keystone of [our] testimony. For all who strive to learn about and follow Christ, the Book of Mormon is a great aid in clarifying our purpose on earth and understanding the role of Christ for all humanity.
