Project Homeless Connect is today at civic center

Posted

Project Homeless Connect, a one-stop event providing free-of-charge services to homeless individuals and families, will be held today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St.

Services provided by community volunteers have in the past included assistance in obtaining medical, dental, mental health and substance abuse treatment; housing; signing up for social services benefits as eligible; legal assistance; getting eyeglasses; obtaining photo identification, food, hygiene items and clothing; wheelchair repair; and haircuts.

Organizers with Ozark Action, Inc., said the goal of the event is to improve access to services and housing for the homeless.

It is being held the day after a statewide Point In Time Count, a census of Missouri's homeless population, regulated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and required to be taken every two years.

Additionally, the Missouri Balance of State Continuum of Care holds an annual homeless count to better assess the needs of the homeless, and includes individuals and families who are sleeping in places not meant for human habitation or in emergency housing situations.
