More than 30 West Plains High School seniors are congratulated by West Plains R-7 School District officials for graduating with summa cum laude honors, the district’s highest academic distinction. ”Cowboy" Rick Hamby and his dedicated crew are gearing up for another historical stagecoach journey. On Friday, the team gathered at the West Plains Daily Quill office, where they were met by Missouri State 155th District Rep. Travis Smith who presented a proclamation to Hamby and his crew. Issued by the Missouri House of Representatives, the decree honors the group's cultural contributions through its unique pen pal letter delivery service. This year's excursion, titled "Dust in the Wind," takes a historic turn along the Smoky Hill Trail, straddling the borders of Kansas and Colorado with several planned stops for delivery of pen pal letters and locations of historical importance. Alongside student letters, the stagecoach will carry messages from the West Plains Senior Center to residents of various nursing homes. The Journey Stagecoach crew will hit the old dusty trail on May 17.

Alton Elementary School art students had a massive display recently showcasing their talents, put together by art teacher Annie Whitten. The show has been held annually for several years, but this was the second year a theme was chosen. This year was "Under The Sea," and featured two-dimensional and three-dimensional art from preschool through fifth grade students. This large piece, made to look like a coral reef, was constructed with recycled and upcycled materials like cardboard packaging and tubes, painted dry pasta pieces and stacked paper cups, plus conventional materials like paper mache and pipe cleaners. It was the centerpiece placed near the entrance, and enhanced by special lighting to make it look as if it was underwater and glowing.

ALTON — Winners in Alton Elementary School’s recent "Under the Sea" themed art show are among entries from 280 students. The event showcased the work of all students in the school and was part of an elaborate and colorful display by art teacher Annie Whitten that filled the halls of the school and ended with an awards ceremony. more

New group launches faith-based community care initiative
