A Dec. 2 webinar hosted by the University of Missouri Extension will help horse owners identify and treat Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM), a central nervous system disease caused by protozoan parasites.
EPM can cause behavioral changes, muscle atrophy and gait abnormalities in horses. The issue is widespread for horse owners, as research suggests roughly 50% of horses have been exposed to Sarcocystis neurona, the most common protozoal pathogen associated with the disease.
Dr. Lynn Martin, an assistant teaching professor of equine internal medicine at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, will lead the session as part of the Horsemen’s Webinar Series. She will discuss how EPM impacts horses, how owners can monitor their animals for symptoms and what treatment options are available.
Participants can register online at pears.io/events/mu/10882. A recording of the session will be sent directly to all registered participants who are unable to attend the live broadcast.
