Maddix Moore of Mtn. View places a wreath on the grave of his great-grandfather, Virgil Colter, during the National Wreaths Across America Ceremony held Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Mtn. View. There were 187 wreaths placed by veterans' family members and volunteers, so every veteran’s grave had a wreath. The ceremony is coordinated so the wreaths are placed at the same time nationwide.

Kosh gang member sentenced to federal prison
Tanner S. Huffman, 30, Koshkonong, was sentenced Thursday by U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips to eight years and six months in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing a firearm. According to court documents, he was a member of the Gangster Disciples and third in command locally as of 2020. more

Mo Dept. of Ag clears Santa to spread Christmas cheer (copy)
Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn and Missouri State Veterinarian Dr. Steve Strubberg on Friday approved livestock movement papers for nine reindeer. Santa Claus from the North Pole applied for the permit last week, providing proof of the healthy herd through a certificate of veterinary inspection signed by licensed veterinarian Dr. Hermey Elf. more
Members of West Plains Elks Lodge 2418 recently presented a check to Dylan Tribble, of Pomona, for his Coats for Kids program. Tribble began the program in 2020, raising $6,000 to buy over 300 coats to distribute that December to elementary schools in Dora, Koshkonong and West Plains. The Elks donation of $2,021 is the largest single donation the local program has received, said a spokesperson for the Elks. WP Elks donate over $2K to Coats for Kids
The Clear Springs Fire Department held a giveaway drawing for a gun and accepted monetary donations to raise $3,613 for Texas County Shop with a Hero program. According to officials, it is the largest donation that Clear Springs Fire Department has made to the annual program. “This donation ensures that we can help an additional 35 children have a better Christmas,” said program Chair Bennie Cook. “I would like to thank Clear Springs Rural Fire Assistant Chief, Sonny Holden, Fire Chief Troy Bradford, Clear Springs Fire Board President Linda Bradford, Clear Springs Volunteer Sasha Holden and the members of Clear Springs Fire Department for everything they do for Clear Springs and Texas County.” Cook added, “Our fundraising goal is $25,000 and this donation will help us exceed that goal.” To learn more about the Texas County Shop with a Hero Program, call Cook at 417-260-2382.

Wendy Lott, center, with the Missouri Department of Conservation Twin Pines Conservation Education Center in Winona recently made a special visit to Summersville Branch Library. While there, she read a book to children present and answered their questions about red foxes. Together, Lott and the children worked to make red fox Christmas tree ornaments from natural materials. The children enjoyed the visit, said Librarian Kathie Cox, who added she also enjoyed the visit.

House fire near Peace Valley claims two lives
A house fire that was reported at about 11:40 p.m. Thursday near Peace Valley resulted in the deaths of two people, but the cause of the blaze as been listed as undetermined by the Missouri Division of Fire Safety (DFS) because of the extent of the structure damage. more
TCMH reports surge in respiratory viruses
Texas County Memorial Hospital's emergency room in Houston has seen an increase in positive respiratory virus cases as Missouri enters its respiratory virus season, hospital board members learned during their most recent monthly meeting Nov. 28. more

Patrol's Troop G to gain new trooper
Col. Eric T. Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces that 25 troopers will graduate from the patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy on Friday. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. in the academy gymnasium, 1510 E. Elm St., Jefferson City. The graduation ceremony will be live streamed on the patrol’s Facebook page, @motrooper. more
