Alton Elementary School art students had a massive display recently showcasing their talents, put together by art teacher Annie Whitten. The show has been held annually for several years, but this was the second year a theme was chosen. This year was "Under The Sea," and featured two-dimensional and three-dimensional art from preschool through fifth grade students. This large piece, made to look like a coral reef, was constructed with recycled and upcycled materials like cardboard packaging and tubes, painted dry pasta pieces and stacked paper cups, plus conventional materials like paper mache and pipe cleaners. It was the centerpiece placed near the entrance, and enhanced by special lighting to make it look as if it was underwater and glowing.

ALTON — Winners in Alton Elementary School’s recent "Under the Sea" themed art show are among entries from 280 students. The event showcased the work of all students in the school and was part of an elaborate and colorful display by art teacher Annie Whitten that filled the halls of the school and ended with an awards ceremony. more

View-Birch Tree School District was gifted an administrative office facility by Simmons Bank, plus office furnishings and a storage facility, and recently celebrated the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The building was formerly used as a bank, and unique elements like a vault and a night deposit box built into the wall remain, hinting at its history. From left: Mtn. Eric Pinson, Mtn. Grove, left, is one of four students in the Eighth U.S. Congressional District of Missouri whose nomination to be appointed to a U.S. military service academy was accepted. The nomination was made by Rep. Jason Smith, right. Pinson is set to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. During a celebratory dinner held April 21 in St. James, Smith recognized all four appointees, including students from St. James, Sikeston and Farmington. “I’m incredibly proud of these bright young men for earning a spot at one of our nation’s highly competitive service academies,” said Smith in a statement to media. “All of these young men are exceptional students and leaders in school. On top of excelling in the classroom, they have also made a real difference serving and giving back to their communities. They will now take on the difficult but highly rewarding task of preparing for a career in military service. I know they have a very bright future ahead and I’m excited to see what they will accomplish.”
Mtn. Grove student appointed to U.S. Naval Academy
Texas County Memorial Hospital was recently awarded $177,292.50 in Department of Public Safety grant funding made available by the American Rescue Plan Act. The grant enables the hospital to purchase a new ambulance, replacing the ambulance in its fleet with the highest mileage, 514,506 miles.

Howell County Commissioners met with Christos House Domestic Violence Services representatives during a recent regular meeting and declared April Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Howell County. The action is meant to bring attention to the prevalence of sexual assault in the area and nationwide, and remind victims of available legal, medical and mental health recovery resources, including Christos House. The nonprofit organization provides guidance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. The proclamation says, in part, that statistics show 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will experience some form of sexual violence with physical contact during their lives. The commission reaffirmed their commitment to "reducing sexual violence in Howell County through prevention education, increased awareness and holding perpetrators who commit acts of violence responsible for their actions."
