Suspect charged in late-December Shannon County murder case
A no-bond warrant has been issued for Patrick Lee Paul, 26, on felony charges in Shannon County, including a count of of second-degree murder. The public records show he was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning before Associate 37th Circuit Judge Sandra Brewer in Shannon County. more

A $65,000 donation made by the Alton Bank and employees, and members of the Combs family, will be used to help the Alton Multipurpose Senior Center either purchase a larger facility or expand and improve upon its current one. The funds were given in memory of Donald Combs, an Alton High School graduate who died in 2019, and in honor of Alice Combs, a graduate of Couch School. Mtn. View Garden Club celebrates holidays with cookie platters
The Mtn. View Garden Club met Dec. 13 to celebrate those who helped the club through the year. Sixteen club members met at the Mtn. View Community Center to combine over 50 dozen cookies that they had baked. Thirty-two Cookie platters were assembled and delivered to the many city departments and individuals who contributed to another successful garden club year, said Robi Tanner, speaking on behalf of the club. After, members enjoyed a festive holiday lunch at Viandel Vineyard in Mtn. View. The Mtn. View Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs, the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri and the Central Region Garden Clubs. Chris and Christopher Smith, owners of CCS Hauling in Alton, recently received a $35,000 microloan through the Ozarks Small Business Incubator to purchase equipment and expand their business. CCS Hauling hauls “anything that fits in their truck” including rock, sawdust, topsoil and dirt, said incubator officials. For more information about the business, call 417-270-0655. OzSBI’s Microloan Fund offers microloans of up to $50,000 to qualifying businesses in Douglas, Howell, Oregon, Ozark, Shannon, Texas and Wright counties and within the city limits of Mammoth Spring, Ark. The stated goal of the program is to stimulate the local economy by providing startup and expansion loans to new and existing businesses. Microloans may be used as direct loans, seed capital, or “gap” financing combined with other lending, officials explained, noting the application process is similar to a traditional bank loan application and the main qualifiers for consideration are good credit and a sound financial plan. Big Spring Campground closed for utility upgrades in January
Beginning Tuesday, the Ozarks National Scenic Riverways’ Big Spring Campground just south of Van Buren in Carter County will be closed for about 30 days in order for crews to complete utility upgrades. more

Faith Inc. of Oregon County receives $10K grant to improve children’s dental health
Faith Inc. of Oregon County has received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks through the Delta Dental Rural Youth Program. The grant will support a partnership with Alton School District and the Big Smiles mobile unit to provide dental exams for students who are financially unable to access care. more
During the week of Nov. 27, the Mtn. View Garden Club hosted its annual Swag Workshop at the Community Center. “We are extremely grateful to the 25 helpers who helped the 17 members in making over 80 of the festive 5-foot high swags,” said club member Robi Tanner of those who contributed their time to assemble evergreen decor to display around the city. “Making the swags is only a part of the process. Our thanks also go out to those who took the time to cut and deliver pickup fulls of the pine, cedar and holly branches that go into making the swags. And not to be forgotten are the dedicated members of the City Park Department who spent many hours hanging the swags throughout the city.” Next year's workshop is planned for Nov. 25 through 27. Anyone with pine or cedar branches to donate to the effort is invited to contact Tanner at 573-292-3000. “Thank you everyone, because without you, projects like this are not possible!” she added. The Mtn. View Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs, the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri and the Central Region Garden Clubs.
