Slaughter market sees heavy supply, lower prices

WEST PLAINS — Compared to last week, slaughter cows and bulls sold $2 to $4 lower Wednesday at the Ozarks Regional Stockyards. Demand was good on a heavy supply of 985 head.

Even though much of the area saw up to 2 inches of rain this week, a lot of cows are coming to market due to the lack of water and winter pastures.

Top Prices of the Day

  • The top slaughter bull sold for $200/cwt.
  • The top slaughter cow sold for $140/cwt.
  • On the replacement side, the top pairs sold for $3,850/pair.
  • The top bred cows sold for $3,500/head.

Pricing Averages Snapshot

  • Breaker Cows (75-80% dressing): Averaged $124.90/cwt.
  • Boner Cows (80-85% dressing): Averaged $125.16/cwt.

Upcoming Event

Next Wednesday’s consignment (Nov. 11) includes a herd sellout of 190 cows with 150 calves at their side.

Feeder steers and heifer calves soften amid welcome rains

Compared to last week, feeder steers were $5 to $10 lower with feeder heifers not well tested on Tuesday. Steer calves were steady to $5 lower with heifer calves $5 to $10 lower. Demand was moderate on a light supply of 1,415 head.

Most of the area was seeing some much-needed rain on Tuesday. Although it is too late for significant pasture growth, it did produce some runoff to help streams and ponds.

Market Highlights

  • The largest draft of the day was 135 head of 776 lb steers which sold for $328/cwt.
  • Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs made up 56% of the offering.
