Ozark Heritage tradition on display

Barren Fork Sorghum demonstrates a traditional Clydesdale-drawn sorghum mill Saturday during the Ozark Heritage Festival on Saturday on the West Plains Civic Center grounds. Mill owner Kelly Pompei said the family mill is named after the Barren Fork Creek near Thomasville, where six generations of her family have kept the Ozarks tradition alive. Before World War II, sorghum served as the primary sweetener in the Ozarks, with farmers splitting the finished product with local mill operators. Samples of sorghum were made available to onlookers. From left, Kyle Pompei leads the horse while holding 2-year-old son Keiran, as Kelly Pompei, John Littlejohn of West Plains and Quinn Morrison of Willow Springs feed raw sorghum stalks into the press. The Clydesdale was provided by Reese Morrison of Pine Meadows Venue in Willow Springs. Watch the Quill for more coverage of the annual two-day festival. (John Deatherage/For the Quill)
