Highway Patrol offers Halloween safety reminders
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers, parents and trick-or-treaters to stay alert and use extra caution on Halloween.
Children may unexpectedly dart into the street, so drivers are encouraged to slow down and watch carefully in residential areas. Motorists also should expect more slow-moving vehicles as people pick up and drop off trick-or-treaters.
Parents are encouraged to remind children to approach only familiar, well-lit homes, avoid entering strangers’ houses or vehicles and look both ways before crossing streets. Adults should accompany young children, while older children should stay in groups.
Costumes also should be chosen with safety in mind. Makeup may be safer than masks that can obstruct a child’s vision, and light-colored clothing or reflective tape can help make children more visible to drivers.
Adults attending Halloween parties or other gatherings where alcohol or other intoxicants are served should designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service.
The patrol encourages everyone to have a safe Halloween.
