The West Plains Council on the Arts has announced a series of craft workshops led by local artist Tara Shahan. Workshops will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. in West Plains. Prices will vary by workshop, with supplies included.
The monthly series begins Tuesday with “Suede & Style: Custom Hat Stenciling, Distressing and Embellishment.” Participants will receive an adjustable faux suede hat to distress, stencil and embellish using feathers, leather, fabric and other materials. The workshop fee is $65 and includes all supplies.
“Painting with Fabric: An Introduction to Japanese Kinusaiga” will be offered Dec. 15, followed by “Vintage Hydrangeas: Acrylic Pitcher Painting” on Jan. 12, “Make Your Mark: Mosaic House Number Plaque” on Feb. 9, “Stitched on Paper: An Introduction to Paper Embroidery” on March 9 and “Laundry Day in the Country: Farmhouse Acrylic Painting” on April 13.
Shahan was raised in a small town in the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio before moving with her family to Missouri at about age 12. She participated in 4-H, where many of her projects involved food, sewing and crafts taught by her mother, a 4-H leader. Shahan earned ribbons for her work at local and state fairs.
Her interest in arts and crafts continued into adulthood. She now teaches workshops throughout the area, including north-central Arkansas. Her work includes acrylic painting on canvas and wood, door hangers, wreaths, faux stained glass, glass etching and other craft projects. Shahan lives in West Plains and has conducted local art and craft workshops for the West Plains Council on the Arts for about six years.
