Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial kickoff of summer and the return of a warm-weather tradition among city council members and municipal employees. Initiated by Mayor Mike Topliff, the custom encourages staff to wear Hawaiian shirts every Friday through Labor Day weekend to foster community pride, positivity and a welcoming atmosphere during the “laid back” summer months. Topliff was inspired by his time in the U.S. Navy stationed in Hawaii and the “Aloha” philosophy of peace, kindness, gentleness and compassion. From left: City Councilman Johnny Murrell, City Administrator Sam Anselm, Mayor Pro Tem Greg Collins, Topliff, and Councilmen Crockett Oaks III and Ron Grennan.
