The Alton School District has been named a 2025-2026 National Beta School of Distinction and School of Merit, national leadership announced.
The dual recognition places Alton among a select group of schools nationwide honored for academic achievement, character development and community service across all eligible grade levels.
To earn the School of Distinction designation, the district increased its total Beta Club membership by at least 10% over the previous school year. Alton was one of 2,959 clubs nationwide to receive the award this year.
Additionally, the district earned the School of Merit award by extending National Beta Club membership to students across all eligible grades — including elementary grades four and five, junior high grades six through eight and high school grades nine through 12. Nationwide, 6,103 clubs received the merit honor.
In a congratulatory letter to the district, National Beta CEO Bobby Hart thanked Alton educators for their "continued support of National Beta and commitment to developing future leaders."
High school Beta sponsor Lisa Thompson expressed pride in the district's students and staff for maintaining active participation across all age groups.
"We are thrilled to receive these awards again this year," Thompson said. "Beta is an important organization in our school district recognizing academic excellence, student character and leadership skills, and following the Beta motto, 'Let Us Lead by Serving Others.'"
National Beta is the nation's largest independent, nonprofit educational youth organization, boasting more than 500,000 active members and 14,000 clubs globally.
