Arts council offers ‘Hometown America’ painting workshop in Sept.

Posted

A workshop hosted by the West Plains Council on the Arts in September will show participants how to create a “Hometown America” painting featuring a rustic barn.

Artist Tara Shahan, of West Plains, will host the workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at Trillium Trust, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd., in East Towne Village. The cost to participate is $35 and includes all supplies.

“The beauty of this old rustic barn comes to life in this Americana nostalgic painting,” say organizers with the council. “In this workshop you will learn to paint this beautiful rustic barn on a 12 x 12 canvas using acrylic paint. Don’t miss out on the fun, sign up today.”

Shahan was raised in a small town in the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio until about the age of 12, she says. Her upbringing included being a member in the Patchworkers 4-H club, where most of her projects consisted of food, sewing and crafts taught by her mother, a 4-H leader. Shahan won ribbons for her work at local and state fairs, including an award for Outstanding of the Day at the Ohio State Fair.

“For the most part I have created things for my own home but now have decided to share those things that I create and cherish so much,” says Shahan. “My passion is for what they are calling these days ‘rustic, primitive and farmhouse.’ Most of my items have been upcycled from a vintage piece or made from a common household item. This is what inspires me.”

She adds she loves frequenting vintage resale and antique stores for her inspirations, and as a result, most of what she makes is “pre-loved” and shows wear.

Space for the workshop is limited. Spots may be reserved through Eventbrite.com by searching “Hometown America” in West Plains, or visit @westplainsarts on Facebook, click on the link to the “Hometown America” event page and click “Find Tickets.” Those interested may also call Paula at 417-293-2325.
