Crockett Oaks III to present Lincoln School history, updates to DAR

Posted

Retired Col. Crockett Oaks III, United States Army, is scheduled to present a program to the Ozark Spring chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution on the history of the Lincoln School, the efforts that have been made in preserving the historical landmark and future plans for the building.

He will make his presentation during the organization’s monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Feb. 3 in the American Legion Hall, 1401 Bill Virdon Blvd. in West Plains.

The historical Lincoln School served African American children in first through eighth grades in the West Plains community grades, and dates back to the 1920s to 1954, with older documents that further suggest the segregation era school was in operation in the early 1900s, prior to the origination of the building.

”Lincoln School’s rich history is an interesting one that will surely hold an audience’s attention,” said Oaks. “Now that restoration of the historic Lincoln School is complete, we look forward to providing the community with top notch programming, which will be some of the information discussed during the program.”

The DAR meeting will open with general meeting protocol to be followed by Oaks’ program. All of Ozark Spring’s educational programs are free and open to the public. The meeting’s hostesses are Lois Frazier and Jessica Joice-Frazier.
