Ahead of area students’ return to school on Aug. 24, Howell County Sheriff's Office issued a reminder that Missouri's new school bus safety law takes effect on Aug. 28.
The updated legislation establishes stricter penalties for motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses displaying flashing red lights and extended stop arms. Key updates include increased fines, points added to driving records and potential driver's license suspensions for repeat offenders. Furthermore, school districts are authorized to install stop-arm cameras on school buses to help identify and prosecute violators.
Law enforcement officials urge drivers to eliminate distractions, slow down in school zones and always watch for children getting on and off school buses.
