Former Republican State Rep. Travis Smith launched his 2026 campaign Thursday evening with a celebratory kickoff event as he sets out to claim a seat as Missouri's 154th House District representative.

The event, held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Ostermeier Brewing Company on South U.S. 63 in West Plains, drew more than 60 attendees. Before speaking, Smith greeted guests and thanked them for their support.

During his address, which lasted under 30 minutes, Smith focused heavily on the economy and his desire to bolster regional resources.

“Everything is for the people," Smith said.

The Pottersville Republican drew a distinction between himself and other candidates by pointing to his legislative record, highlighting his willingness to cast difficult votes.

“It’s easy to say no," Smith said. "I’m someone who can make the hard yes.”

Smith also touched on his personal background, noting his graduation from William Woods University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri. He emphasized his 17-year tenure coaching at West Plains High School and spoke about the importance of community-centered decision-making.

Smith, a West Plains native who previously lived in Twin Bridges in Douglas County, first entered the Missouri House in 2021 representing the 155th District. In that race, he defeated Mike Lind 84.8% to 15.2%. He served on several committees during his tenure, which concluded in early 2025 following a narrow 52.6% to 47.4% loss to Brad Hudson in the 2024 primary election for the 33rd District Senate seat.

The 154th District covers nearly all of Howell County, excluding the extreme northeast corner. The seat is currently held by Republican incumbent Lisa Durnell of Willow Springs.

In the upcoming primary election Aug. 4, Smith will face Durnell. The winner of the Republican primary will advance to the Nov. 3 general election to face unopposed Democratic candidate JoJo Stewart of Willow Springs.
