Four recent crashes claim lives of five Arkansans

Arkansas State Police reported the death of an Izard County man after a crash at 3 p.m. Saturday on Highway 9 in Mt. Olive, Izard County.

Gary Raney, 68, of Melbourne, was headed south on Highway 9 in his 2004 Jeep, reported Tpr. Nathan Masterson, , Troop I of the state police in Harrison. The vehicle reportedly left the road, crossed a private driveway into a wooded area, where it struck a tree and came to its final rest in the woods, facing south.

The Izard County Coroner’s Office took possession of Raney’s remains, the report shows.

A Calico Rock, Ark., resident died of injuries suffered in a crash at 11 p.m. Friday on Highway 5 in Stone County.

Luke Sanders, 24, was driving his northbound 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck on Highway 5, where it ran off the east side of the road, overcorrected to the left, crossed both lanes of the highway and rolled into a ditch on the west side, causing Sanders to be thrown from the vehicle, reported Tpr. Masterson, Troop I of the state police in Harrison.

Sanders’ body was taken to Izard County Medical Center to be held, the report shows.

Two youths were hurt, one fatally, in a crash at 1:10 p.m. Sept. 2 on Pickern Hall Road in Viola, Fulton County.

Cpl. Jay Bryan reported a southbound GMC Envoy driven by a youth lost control, ran off the left side of the road and overturned.

A minor ,who was a passenger and whose identifying information is not made public record due to state laws protecting the privacy of children, was fatally injured in the crash, and the remains were taken to Baker Funeral Home in Salem, Ark. The driver was taken to Fulton County Hospital in Salem for treatment.

A crash at 5:43 p.m. Aug. 30 at the intersection of Arkansas Highway 289 with Highway 9 in Fulton County claimed two lives.

Terry Stubbs, 77, of Mammoth Spring in Fulton County, and Delone Bookout, 65, of Violet Hill in Izard County about 54 mils south of West Plains, succumbed to their injuries, Mammoth Spring Police Chief Jamie Turnbough reported to the state police, noting two men survived the crash.

According to Turnbough, a northbound 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Stubbs, traveling on Highway 289, failed to stop at the stop sign marking the intersection with Highway 9 and crossed directly into the path of a westbound 2019 Toyota RAV4 SUV driven by Jeffery Bookout, 56, also of Violet Hill. As a result, Turnbough said, the Toyota struck the Ford in the passenger side.

Stubbs and Delone Bookout, a passenger in the SUV, were taken to Baxter Health in Mtn. Home, Ark., and Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains, where they each succumbed to their injuries. Clary Funeral Home took possession of Stubbs’ remains, the report shows.

Jeffery Bookout and a second passenger, Jerry Bookout, 74, also of Violet Hill, were also hurt in the crash, but survived, according to Turnbough’s report.
