Dear Readers,

To all political candidates running for office, from local council seats to the highest positions in the land, this editorial is for you. This message spans across the political spectrum, addressing every candidate regardless of party affiliation. Let me assure you, I'm not here to pick sides or delve into partisan politics. This isn't about leaning one way or another. Instead, it's about a troubling trend I've observed over the years, a trend that's only getting worse with each election cycle.

So here’s the crux of my message: If you are running for office, spend your time telling me why I should vote for you. Don’t waste your precious moments telling me why I shouldn't vote for your opponent. Focus on what you bring to the table. What are your plans? How do you intend to execute those plans? I don’t want to hear your opinions of your opponent. I want to hear about you.

Let’s face it, the political climate has become a quagmire of negativity. Campaigns are increasingly dominated by mudslinging and character assassination. We’re bombarded with ads and speeches that spend more time tearing down opponents than building up their own platforms. This approach does a disservice to voters, reducing our choices to the lesser of two evils rather than presenting us with candidates we can truly believe in.

When I go to the polls, I don’t want to vote for the candidate who is just less terrible. I want to vote for the candidate who inspires confidence, who has a vision for the future, and who lays out a clear, actionable plan to achieve that vision. Tell me what you're passionate about, what drives you, and how you plan to make a difference. Give me reasons to support you, not just reasons to oppose your competitor.

It’s not just about personal preferences or partisan loyalty. It’s about the future of our communities, our states, and our nation. We need leaders who can articulate their goals and the steps they’ll take to reach them. We need to hear about your policies, your proposed solutions to our common problems, and your commitment to making things better for everyone.

When candidates focus solely on attacking their opponents, they contribute to a culture of cynicism and disillusionment. People become disengaged and disheartened. They start to believe that all politicians are the same, that there's no real choice, just a selection of lesser evils. This mindset undermines our democracy, making it harder for genuine leaders to emerge and for meaningful change to occur.

Think about it this way: people will complain about the things and people they dislike, but they will fight for what they believe in. When you present a positive, compelling vision, you give people something to rally around. You inspire them to get involved, to volunteer, to vote, and to become advocates for your cause. This kind of positive engagement is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy.

Imagine a campaign season where candidates focus on their own merits, their plans, and their visions. Picture debates that center on issues and policies rather than personal attacks. Envision a political landscape where voters are energized and optimistic because they see real choices and real possibilities for the future.

To all candidates, I urge you to take this to heart. Elevate the discourse. Spend your time and resources showing us why you are the best choice. Engage with us honestly and openly. Share your vision, your plans, and your commitment to making a difference. When you do, you not only earn our votes, but you also earn our respect and our trust.

If we want to move forward as a nation, as states, as counties, and as cities, we need options that we believe in, not just options we are against. We need candidates who can inspire us, who can lead with integrity, and who can turn their visions into reality. It's time to shift the focus from tearing down opponents to building up our communities with positive, constructive ideas. Let’s make our politics about hope and progress, not fear and division.

So, to every candidate out there, the challenge is clear. Tell us why we should vote for you. Show us what you bring to the table. Inspire us with your vision and your plans. Let’s move forward together, building a future we can all believe in.

Warm Regards,
Chris Herbolsheimer
