Inaugural Bear-ly Spring Festival, talent show draw crowds despite early rain

Posted

Despite early rain showers, the inaugural Bear-ly Spring Festival and Willow's Got Talent
competition brought crowds downtown on April 11 for a day of community entertainment.
Rain delayed the opening ceremonies and forced the first two scheduled performances indoors
to the Star Theatre. When the weather cleared, crowds steadily grew and the remaining
entertainment was held outdoors, shared Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce Executive
Director Kim McCormick.
City departments worked from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ensure safety and logistics. The Electric
Department quickly restored a temporary power outage at the Main Stage, and the Fire
Department dried the stage for performers.
The talent show featured close scores and a variety of local acts. Bella Brown of Mtn. Grove
took first place with her vocal performance of "Daddy's Girl.” Second place went to Jessie Root
and Outfit of Oddities for a unique fire-breathing and singing act. Victor Brown, a 4-year-old
piano player, claimed third place.

Other competitors included vocalists Amelia Deluna, Liza Karaivan, Vernon Kohlbusch, Christian
Monks and Corazon Hunter, as well as storyteller Cretia Ussery. The event was judged by
Michele Myers, Kim Osborn and Gaylon Harper. Sound technician Jeff Trantham was also
credited with keeping the show running smoothly through technical difficulties.
The Kid Zone, independently managed by the Willow Springs Future Business Leaders of
America, featured face painting, eye screenings, interactive games, Bear-ly Golf and a cake
walk. Food vendors saw steady lines, with several selling out of favorites like pie, coffee and
popcorn.
McCormick praised the collaborative effort.
"It’s because of that spirit and the willingness of so many to come together that events like this
are possible — and why we are so proud to call Willow Springs home," McCormick said.
