The Current River Callers' chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Missouri Department of Conservation will host a free JAKES Day event for children ages 6 to 12 on Oct. 17.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Twin Pines Conservation Center, 1.3 miles east of Winona on U.S. 60. Onsite registration and a free lunch will take place from 11 to 11:45 a.m., with hands-on activities and outdoor skills training beginning at noon.
Every registered attendee will receive a free goodie bag and a membership to JAKES, which stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship. Participants will also be entered into prize drawings held during the event.
As a youth division of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the JAKES program provides outdoor opportunities and challenges tailored to the abilities of young participants. The organization is dedicated to informing, educating and involving youth in wildlife conservation and the wise stewardship of natural resources.
While onsite signups will be available, preregistration is strongly recommended and can be completed through the Twin Pines Conservation Center's website, mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/places/twin-pines-conservation-center. Organizers remind all attendees, including those who preregister online, to check in at the center's main building upon arrival to ensure children are entered into the day's events and prize drawings.
