Classic hot rods line up outside the historic Lincoln School on Friday during a community car show held in observance of Juneteenth. The Lincoln School Project hosted the car show alongside food trucks, live music and educational programs to mark the federal holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The facility served as the city's segregation-era school for Black students and is now a preserved historical landmark. A portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” Juneteenth is a U.S. national holiday that recognizes June 19, 1865, the day that “final enforcement” of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas was announced. The act freed all remaining slaves in that state, about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued; up to that point it was not widely enforced by the military. Slavery would not be officially illegal until December that year with the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
