Lincoln School Project to host film viewing, discussion for 3-year anniversary

Posted

The Lincoln School Project invites the community to a special viewing and discussion of the award-winning film “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” on Saturday.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lincoln School Project, 1400 Pony Thomas St. in West Plains. The program is presented in celebration of the organization's three-year anniversary.

Based on Ernest J. Gaines’ acclaimed novel, “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” follows the remarkable life of a woman born into slavery who lives to witness the Civil Rights Movement. Organizers noted her story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, perseverance and the enduring pursuit of equality.

Following the viewing, attendees are invited to stay for a guided community discussion exploring the film’s themes and their relevance to shared history and the future. Participants are encouraged to share perspectives, ask questions and engage in respectful conversation.

The Lincoln School Project is dedicated to preserving the history of West Plains’ historic Lincoln School and the community known as “The Hill,” while creating opportunities for education, dialogue, artistic expression and community engagement. Through exhibits, public programs, lectures and cultural events, the project honors the stories of those who lived, learned and taught at Lincoln School while inspiring future generations.

“The Lincoln School Project has always been about more than preserving a building,” founders Crockett and Tonya Oaks said. “It is about preserving stories, encouraging meaningful conversations, and creating opportunities for our community to learn together. As we celebrate three years of this work, 'Miss Jane Pittman' provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on how far we have come while considering the work that still lies ahead.”

Admission is free and open to the public. For additional information, email LincolnSchool65775@gmail.com or visit LincolnSchoolProject.com.
