Officials at Missouri State University-West Plains announced Joanna Patillo, instructor of nursing, has been honored with the 2026 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The award was presented April 30 by university officials during a ceremony at Missouri State University in Springfield. The annual award recognizes educators from Missouri’s public colleges and universities. It honors faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, innovation in course design and delivery, student advising, service to their institutions and commitment to academic success.
“It comes as no surprise to me that Joanna received this award. I have had the privilege of knowing her for many years as both a nurse and an educator, and she truly demonstrates excellence in all that she does,” said MSU-WP Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Lisa Wade. “Joanna has a remarkable ability to achieve at a high level while also uplifting her students and colleagues, inspiring them to grow and reach their full potential.”
Patillo was selected by a committee of her peers based on input from students and faculty.
“Mrs. Patillo is more than an outstanding instructor — she is an inspiration and role model whose influence will stay with her students long after they leave the classroom,” said MSU-WP Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Michael Orf. “Mrs. Patillo strives during every lecture to ensure nursing students fully understand the information and feel comfortable in their practice. Mrs. Patillo has a bright personality that makes every student feel seen, heard and cared for.”
Beyond the classroom, Patillo leads a study abroad program, taking students to Jamaica, where they visit clinics and different home settings to care for individuals who need health care.
“Joanna exemplifies what it means to be both an educator and leader. Her passion for nursing shines through in the way she mentors students and prepares them to be compassionate caregivers,” said MSU-WP Chancellor Zora Mulligan.
