Due to extremely high temperatures today, a peak alert has been issued for members of Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative (HOEC), asking they limit or alternate the use of major appliances including dishwashers, washers, dryers, ovens, and stoves.
The alert is issued until 7 p.m., Monday. HOEC officials reminded members conserving use now can save money in the future. If peak demand is reached now, the increased cost could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars in the future.
An extreme heat warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) and is set to expire at 7 a.m. Tuesday. A heat advisory now in effect is set to expire at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Heat index values could reach 115 degrees during the warning and 110 degrees during the advisory, according to the NWS.
The City of West Plains has not issued a peak alert, and are running generators to help offset additional electricity usage during peak hours, officials said.
