A Dent County pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday evening, according to Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, headquartered in Rolla.

Tpr. J.S. Leathers reported the accident happened at 5:15 p.m. on Highway 32, 3 miles east of Salem in Dent County, as David E. Davis, 83, of Salem, was crossing the road. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Ben Pursifull about an hour after the accident.

Leathers reported nothing is known about the vehicle that struck Davis, including the direction of travel or who the driver might be.

The Dent County Sheriff's Department, the patrol's Major Crash Team No. 5, and Tpr. B.A. Dettenwanger assisted at the scene. It is reportedly the 31st fatality for the year and the first for December in Troop I.
