Sodomy charge against former WS man dismissed

Loyd A. Coffia, 49, a former Willow Springs resident charged with second-degree statutory sodomy in 2019, has had the case against him dismissed, according to court records.

Authorities initially accused Coffia of touching a 13-year-old girl in a sexual manner in June 2019. He was further accused of giving marijuana to the victim and two other teen girls who reportedly witnessed the incident as a bribe to prevent them from telling anyone.

The incident allegedly occurred at a home in Willow Springs, and a Howell County grand jury filed formal charges by indictment in December 2019.

Court records show Coffia waived formal arraignment and pleaded not guilty in January 2020. Official documents provided to the Quill show that Howell County Prosecutor Mike Hutchings dismissed the charge in December 2021 by filing a motion of “nolle prosequi” — a legal notice indicating the prosecution is unwilling to pursue the case.
