Traffic crashes claim lives of two area men

Two area men in their 30s have died of injuries suffered in traffic crashes that occurred Tuesday and Wednesday, reports the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Richard E. Clewett, 39, Caulfield, died as the result of a rollover accident at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday on V Highway, 2.5 miles west of Caulfield in Ozark County.

Tpr. W.A. Wadlington, Troop of the patrol, Willow Springs, reported an Clewett’s eastbound 2000 GMC Sierra ran off the right side of the road and struck a ditch before returning to the road. The pickup truck reportedly then crossed the center line, ran off the right side of the road again and overturned.

It was not known whether or not Clewett was wearing a seat belt.

Ozark County Coroner Gene Britt pronounced the driver dead at 12:50 p.m. at the scene.

Wadlington was assisted at the scene by Cpls. N.J. Britt and J.R. Roberts.

Nathanael T. Giese, 34, Willow Springs, died of injuries caused when he was thrown from his vehicle at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday on Freedom Road, about 6 miles north of Willow Springs in Texas County.

Msgt. D.B. Pounds reported an eastbound 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Giese ran off the left side of the road, overcorrected, then ran off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned.

Giese was not wearing a seat belt, the report shows.

Texas County Coroner Marie Lasater pronounced Giese dead at 10:19 p.m. at the scene.

Pounds was assisted at the scene by Tpr. L.J. Combs, Cpl. M.T. Weakley, Willow Springs Fire and Rescue, and Clear Springs Fire and Rescue.

Giese’s death is the 37th traffic fatality and Clewett’s is the 38th for the year in the nine-county Troop G area, compared to 29 at this time in 2022.
