Two from Ava seriously injured in Sunday crash near Carthage

A two-vehicle collision resulted in serious injuries to four people, including two Ava residents, at 11:47 a.m. Sunday on Highway 96, a mile east of Carthage in Jasper County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Tpr. J. Drum with Troop D of the patrol, Springfield, reported a westbound 2023 Ford Explorer driven on by Michael B. Roycroft, 62, Patea Taranaki, New Zealand, attempted a left turn onto County Road 118 and pulled into the path of an eastbound 2013 GMC 2500 driven by Frank L. Potter, 73, Ava.

After the impact the Ford came to rest in the road and the GMC ran off the left side of the highway, Drum reported.

The GMC’s driver and passenger Francis C. Potter, 71, also of Ava, were wearing seat belts and both were taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Joplin for treatment, the report shows.

Roycroft was wearing a seat belt, but passenger Jaylonn T. Baxter, 67, Niangua, was not, the patrol reported. The two were also reportedly taken by ambulance to the same medical facility.

TWO BOYS HURT IN ATV CRASHES

An ATV driven by a 9-year-old boy from Willow Springs crashed and rolled on top of a 13-year-old boy at 9:30 a.m. Sunday on private property off of Railroad Drive in Willow Springs, causing serious injuries for the older boy. Children’s names are not provided by the patrol due to state law protecting the privacy of minors.

Tpr. L.J. Combs with Troop G of the patrol, Willow Springs, reported the 9-year-old driver of the 2022 Massimo 500 ATV was trying to turn left when the vehicle overturned, throwing both boys from it and coming to rest on top of the older boy. Neither reportedly wore helmets.

The teen, a Winona resident, was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in Springfield for treatment, the report shows. No injuries were reported for the other child.

Combs was assisted at the scene by Cpl. M. Barron.

A 12-year-old boy from Alton was injured in an ATV crash at 5:45 p.m. Thursday on County Road 210, 4 miles south of Alton in Oregon County.

Tpr. T.D. Pond reported the boy was not wearing a helmet as he drove an eastbound Yamaha that ran off the road and overturned, causing him to be thrown from it.

He was taken by Oregon County Ambulance to Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains for treatment of minor injuries, the patrol reported.

LOUISIANA WOMAN HURT IN REAR-END COLLISION

Moderate injuries reported for a Louisiana woman after a rear-end crash at 12:10 p.m. Saturday on Highway 17 in Texas County, 3 miles south of Summersville.

Tpr. Combs reported Nancy L. Cooley, 63, Morgan City, La., was driving north in a 2020 Nissan Kicks SUV that was rear-ended by a 2004 Dodge 2500 driven by William D. Grammar, 24, Summersville.

Grammar’s pickup truck went off the right side of the road and hit two mailboxes, and Cooley’s SUV went off the left side, striking a ditch, Combs reported.

Cooley, who did not wear a seat belt, was flown by Mercy Lifeline to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, the report shows. No injuries were reported for Grammar.

Combs was assisted at the scene by Cpl. Barron and Msgt. C.A. Kimes.

SERIOUS INJURIES REPORTED IN TWO LATE-WEEK CRASHES

Gregory C. Oliphant, 45, Mtn. Grove, suffered serious injuries in a rollover accident at 2:15 a.m. Friday on Highway 95, a mile south of Manes in Wright County.

According to Tpr. Z.B. Tate, a northbound 2005 Nissan Titan driven by Oliphant crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, impacted a ditch and overturned.

The vehicle then returned to the highway and ran off the right side of the road, according to the patrol.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and was flown by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield for treatment, the report shows.

Two drivers, including a West Plains man, suffered serious injuries in a crash involving three vehicles at 7:36 p.m. Thursday on south U.S. 63, 2 miles north of Koshkonong in Oregon County.

Tpr. C.C. Battreal reported a northbound 2005 Buick Lacrosse driven by Ronald G. Christensen, 71, West Plains, crossed the center line and the front driver's side of the vehicle sideswiped the front of an oncoming 2002 Chevrolet Express van driven by Danielle M. Barkley, 40, of Central Point, Ore.

Debris from the Buick then struck an oncoming 2013 Toyota Tacoma driven by Thomas E. Brawley, 35, of Mammoth Spring, Ark., Battreal reported.

It was not known if Christensen was wearing a seat belt, and he was flown by Survival Flight to Cox South Medical Center in Springfield for treatment.

Barkley and Brawley were wearing seat belts and Barkley was taken by Oregon County Ambulance to Ozarks Healthcare for treatment, Battreal reported. No injuries were reported for Brawley.
