Willow Springs School Board votes to create temporary Board Evaluation Committee

Posted

The Willow Springs School Board convened for its regular meeting on Jan. 8, swearing a new student representative and voting to create a committee dedicated to reforming evaluations of the school board and superintendent.

At the top of the meeting, board secretary swore in Kolton Stolba to be the student representative on the board through December.

The consent agenda was presented for approval, including a financial update showing the school district’s total balance is about $2.45 million, down from about $2.92 in December and $5.02 in January 2023. New hires approved included Jessica Boutcher in the cafeteria and Sonia Williams as a paraprofessional, effective this school year, and Hannah Collins was approved as a substitute teacher.

Under informational items, the board reviewed administrator’s reports for the district. Presentations of the district’s Annual Performance Review and adult were made to the board, and Superintendent Dr. Marty Spence discussed scheduling a winter board retreat for 9 a.m. Feb. 17. Discussion from the board also included the possibility of adding an additional maintenance position.

The board discussed forming a temporary Board Evaluation Committee, with the goal to work on reforming the current board and superintendent evaluations. Following discussion, on a motion by Brent Colley seconded by Scott Foster, the board voted unanimously to move forward with creating the committee.

A motion by Adam Webb, seconded by Debbie Bryan, also led to the board’s approval of the 2023 audit as presented by a representative of Thomas and Douglas Company, also without opposition.

Prior to adjourning, board members moved into a closed executive session to discuss personnel matters.

Also present for the meeting were board President Mac Gum and members Matt Hobson and Jeff Lovan.

The board typically meets on the second Monday of each month. The public is welcome to attend.
