WPE teacher recognized as 2024 McDonald’s Outstanding Educator
West Plains Elementary teacher Haley Falterman was recently celebrated for being selected as a 2024 McDonald’s Outstanding Educator. Porter Waggoner McDonald’s General Manager Kayla Butler and Hilburn-Vaini McDonald’s Supervisor Michael McBride visited the school to present Falterman with the award and a $100 gift card. more
Jane Ward, instructor of childhood education and family studies with Missouri State University’s Outreach program in West Plains, teaches a class on Foundations of Literacy Instruction to a new crop of students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Education-Elementary degree (BSEd) at the Missouri State University-West Plains campus. The Teacher Education Completion Program, through which the BSEd is offered, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall.

Twenty-five years ago, Missouri State University began offering the Teacher Education Completion Program at Missouri State University-West Plains, giving area residents who wanted to become elementary teachers a local pathway to achieve their dream.  more

A presentation was given at the Oct. 15 West Plains R-7 School Board meeting by the instructor Dr. Janet Brewer, left, and students who enrolled in the recently reinstated driver's education class. The class was offered during summer school, and had so many students who wanted to enroll, an additional two weeks was added to accommodate them. The students, Wyatt Battreal, center left, and William LaChance, center right, talked about what they learned and Brewer reminded school board members of the importance of giving first-time drivers real-life experience and confidence, plus the positive impact that can have on driver safety. Part of the curriculum included long-distance highway driving to Springfield, Ava and Elephant Rocks State Park in Iron County. Students also learned basic vehicle maintenance skills like changing tires and checking fluids, and what to do if pulled over by law enforcement. With Brewer and the students is school Principal Ryan Smith.
R-7 School Board announces filing dates for 2025 election
Members of the West Plains R-7 School Board recently met for their regular monthly session last week and had a full agenda, including discussions of the spring election, school bus bids and the salaries offered to some staff members. more

West Plains R-7 School District officials extend their congratulations to the 2024-2025 National Honor Society officers of West Plains High School President Jack Rutledge is carried by, from left, Vice President Avani Sahoo, Secretary Hadley Ball and Historian Allie Dawson. The students were elected by their NHS peers and, according to district Communications Director Lana Snodgras, “will be wonderful examples of servant leadership in our program this year.”

Missouri State University-West Plains Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, who introduced new MSU System President Biff Williams, gave an overview of the West Plains campus performance last week during the annual state of the university presentation. Highlights included enrollment numbers, degree program completion, programs and activities, and additions to the campus.

More than 1,900 students enrolled this fall at MSU-WP
A total of 1,942 students are enrolled this fall at Missouri State University-West Plains, according to official enrollment statistics for the 2024 fall semester released today. more
Student Ambassadors for the 2024-2025 academic year at Missouri State University-West Plains have been selected. Ambassadors represent the campus to prospective students at community and university events and assist the admissions office with recruitment efforts. To become an Ambassador, students must apply through the MSU-WP Scholarship Handbook and undergo an interview. They are selected based on strong academic background, community service and involvement. Howell Valley science lab bolstered with new microscopes
Howell Valley School has received a generous grant of $2,621 from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, in collaboration with the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation and Commerce Trust. The funding was used to enhance the school’s science lab with the purchase of a high-powered microscope and a stereoscope. more

West Plains R-7 School District Superintendent Dr. Wes Davis gave an overview of the many recent district improvements, plus provided some figures showing the financial health of the district, during a Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Sept. 5.

Missouri State University-West Plains recently hosted a luncheon for new teachers in the West Plains R-7 School District as part of its “New Teacher Academy” program. Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, standing, welcomed the group to campus and the community and discussed the importance of focusing on the value of every student, as many of them wrestle with the question of their own value. About 60 new teachers attended the luncheon.

These are just some of the instruments that were waiting for the first students in Missouri State University-West Plains’ new collegiate music program when classes began Aug. 19. Director Rocky Long, with instruments above, said more instruments will be added to the inventory as funds allow.

MSU-WP announces new building names, office relocations beginning this fall
Students returning to Missouri State University-West Plains this fall will notice several changes on campus. Several buildings have new names, and some offices have been relocated. more
On Wednesday morning, West Plains High School hosted Zizzer Day for all incoming freshmen. More than 200 students in attendance went through a miniature version of their schedules, learned about various clubs and activities at the activity fair, had lunch together and became familiar with the building and their lockers. District officials expressed thanks to all faculty and staff for helping to make the freshmen transition smooth for the students.
