Dear Readers,

It’s officially that time of year, folks. Can you hear it? I’ve started to hear the call, the irresistible call to be outside. And why wouldn’t you want to be? It’s going to be a huge week in West Plains.

First up, the Heart of the Ozarks Fair kicks off Monday and runs through Saturday night. Now, being the publisher of the West Plains Daily Quill and West Plains Gazette, it’s pretty much a given that I’ll be there, camera in hand, ready to snap some pictures and chat with folks. And if I end up eating a hotdog and a funnel cake, and maybe even lose a few bucks on those clearly rigged carnival games, well, that’s just part of the job’s hazards! Ah, the fair. How can something be so terrible and so wonderful at the same time?

But wait, I did say it’s going to be a big week, right? Because it’s not just the fair that’s happening. Next weekend, we’ve got the Old-Time Music, Ozarks Heritage Festival taking over downtown. Yep, you guessed it, my job will have me there too, taking more pictures, talking to more folks, and yes, consuming even more street food. Is anyone else as excited as I am about Big Smith playing at the Old-Time Music Festival? Because I’ve been singing “12-inch 3-speed oscillating fan” out loud in my office while writing this column!

I want to take a moment to personally thank all the amazing people who work so hard to make these events happen. Without you, these wonderful traditions wouldn’t be possible. So, here’s my call to everyone in West Plains — make plans to attend the fair and the Old-Time Music Festival. These events are more than just fun; they’re a celebration of our community and heritage. I’ll see you all there!

Warm Regards,
Chris Herbolsheimer
