MU Extension to offer tai chi classes starting May 11

Posted

A tai chi program aimed at arthritis management and fall prevention will be offered May 11 through July 27 at the Howell County University of Missouri Extension office, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd. in West Plains.

Tai chi is recognized as an effective and easy-to-learn exercise for both the mind and body, organizers explained. The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention program is designed to improve multiple aspects of health through slow, gentle movements. Organizers note the degree of exertion can be easily adjusted, making the classes suitable for adults of all fitness levels and abilities.

According to medical studies, ongoing practice can provide benefits such as pain relief, improved balance and a reduction in falls. Over the course of the 16 one-hour instructional classes, participants will learn warmup exercises, six basic moves, six advanced moves and cooldown techniques to help integrate the mind and body.

The nine-week program includes 19 sessions total. It begins with an initial evaluation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 11 and concludes with a final evaluation July 27.

The cost is $50 per person, and payment is due during the initial evaluation. To register, call the MU Extension office Monday through Friday at 417-256-2391.
