Compassion is a feeling of sympathy for the suffering of others together with a desire to relieve it. In the Bible, compassion is often named as an attribute of God. In Psalm 116:5 “The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. Our God is “a compassionate and gracious God; slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,” Psalm 86:15. As God’s Son, Jesus exhibited God’s attributes when he showed compassion to the sick, the hungry, and the lost. His greatest act of compassion was to die on the cross for our salvation. As Christians, we are called to show compassion to others. This isn’t always easy, because we feel they don’t deserve it. Remembering God’s gracious and undeserved compassion toward us, let us show compassion to others. “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,” Colossians 3:12. May God bless your week. Diane Cooke, Pastor of the Presbyterian churches, Willow Springs and Mtn. View.
