The Roman emperor Caesar Augustus (Luke 2:1) was oppressive. Let’s remember that the words to the shepherds are for us, too… “The angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy to all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.’” Luke 2:10-11. That means in the face of all the uncertainties of life, we need not fear, for in the baby of Bethlehem we have discovered a God who is loving, gracious, and forgiving. First-lady Roselynn Carter passed away on November 19, 2023. Her death and thinking about her family’s contributions to our country prompted me to think of their legacy.
