The Current River Caller’s chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) presented its 2024 scholarship at the Hunting Heritage Banquet held Jan. 20. Hailey Michel was present to receive the scholarship of $500. “Hailey is a senior at Summersville High school and is an outstanding student in her class and in the community,” said organization officials. “She also has a great love of the outdoors and hunting and believes it is important to preserve this heritage for future generations.” The scholarship is set up to ensure the NWTF has the dedicated conservationists needed in the future. Applicants for the scholarship are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, community involvement and commitment to conservation. Michel’s application will be submitted to the state for a chance to win at least $1,000 in additional scholarship money. State winners then have a chance at the national scholarship worth $10,000.

Betty (Kriegh) McGuire, holding a photo of herself at the age of 16, will celebrate her 99th birthday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at Shepherd’s View Assisted Living in Alton. She is the eldest daughter of longtime West Plains weather broadcasters P.S. and Julia Kriegh. Betty was 16 when she married her husband, Donnie McGuire, and together they owned and operated the Alton Jewelry Store and, for more than 45 years, delivered mail between Thayer and Alton. Betty’s four children, Donna (McGuire) Caruthers, Micki (McGuire) Kirkham, David McGuire and Jim McGuire, will join her in welcoming friends and family to the birthday celebration.

A $65,000 donation made by the Alton Bank and employees, and members of the Combs family, will be used to help the Alton Multipurpose Senior Center either purchase a larger facility or expand and improve upon its current one. The funds were given in memory of Donald Combs, an Alton High School graduate who died in 2019, and in honor of Alice Combs, a graduate of Couch School. A generous donation of $65,000 to the Alton Multipurpose Senior Center made by the Alton Bank, its employees, and the Combs family is going to go far in expanding the facility, a need that has been identified for some time, according to senior center board member Richard Todd. more

Chris and Christopher Smith, owners of CCS Hauling in Alton, recently received a $35,000 microloan through the Ozarks Small Business Incubator to purchase equipment and expand their business. CCS Hauling hauls “anything that fits in their truck” including rock, sawdust, topsoil and dirt, said incubator officials. For more information about the business, call 417-270-0655. OzSBI’s Microloan Fund offers microloans of up to $50,000 to qualifying businesses in Douglas, Howell, Oregon, Ozark, Shannon, Texas and Wright counties and within the city limits of Mammoth Spring, Ark. The stated goal of the program is to stimulate the local economy by providing startup and expansion loans to new and existing businesses. Microloans may be used as direct loans, seed capital, or “gap” financing combined with other lending, officials explained, noting the application process is similar to a traditional bank loan application and the main qualifiers for consideration are good credit and a sound financial plan. A third suspect in the Shannon County death of a man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been charged with first-degree murder. A no-bond warrant for Tony A. Fox, 35, Winona, was issued and served Dec. 22, according to court records. more

Faith Inc. of Oregon County receives $10K grant to improve children’s dental health
Faith Inc. of Oregon County has received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks through the Delta Dental Rural Youth Program. The grant will support a partnership with Alton School District and the Big Smiles mobile unit to provide dental exams for students who are financially unable to access care. more

The L-A-D Foundation, with support from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, is launching a new $55,000 grant program to support the conservation of natural and cultural resources in L-A-D Foundation’s 11-county service area. more
Members of West Plains Elks Lodge 2418 recently presented a check to Dylan Tribble, of Pomona, for his Coats for Kids program. Tribble began the program in 2020, raising $6,000 to buy over 300 coats to distribute that December to elementary schools in Dora, Koshkonong and West Plains. The Elks donation of $2,021 is the largest single donation the local program has received, said a spokesperson for the Elks. Delta Kappa Gamma's Xi Chapter initiated four new members during its November meeting.
