The Lady Zizzers golf team is state-bound, after taking second place Thursday in the Class 3, District 3 Tournament at the West Plains Country Club.
The Class 3 state tournament is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club, 2600 Meadow Lake Drive, New Bloomfield. Tee times have not yet been announced.
West Plains secured second place by shooting a team score of 376. Carl Junction took first with a 360, and Lebanon placed third with a 395.
"We played consistent golf throughout the tournament and didn’t let too many holes get out of hand," said West Plains Head Coach James Sharp. "Without a stroke limit, we saw a few really high scores on a few holes."
To compete against the high-caliber field at state, Sharp noted the Lady Zizzers will need to play smart and clean up a few things around the greens to improve their scoring.
"I am looking forward to competing as a team at the state tournament, for the first time in a long time for Lady Zizzer Golf," Sharp said.
According to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), this marks the first time the West Plains girls golf team has qualified for the state tournament as a team since 2011, when the program finished second in the Class 2 state championship 15 years ago.
Sharp also extended his gratitude to the local community for helping make the district tournament a success.
"Especially to our Activities Director Ashley Cooley, Will Hartenstein and the rest of the country club staff, the country club board members, West Plains Bank, Premier Pet Transport LLC, John Richards and all of our volunteers,” Sharp said.
