Hammond Mill Camp recently received a $2,000 donation from Community First Banking Company, which has locations in West Plains, Mtn. Grove and Thayer. The funds were raised through a giveaway drawing for a kayak filled with float trip supplies. The winner of the raffle was Marcus Cooley of Mtn. Grove. Hammond Mill Camp is a historic campground located on CC Highway west of West Plains. It is used for an annual summer Bible camp, as well as a venuee for weddings and family reunions. VANZANT — The Whetstone Band performed country and classic rock favorites at the start of night two of the 59th annual Vanzant Picnic, held July 12 at the Vanzant Community Center. The event brings together the members and former members of the small Douglas County community to visit, play games, enjoy food and listen to live music. This year’s event was dedicated to Beverly Coffman Emery, a familiar face at the annual picnic who died about a week prior. The community center relies on events such as this to help raise donations for the center and support other community services like the Eastern Douglas County Volunteer Fire Department, often the first responders to traffic crashes, fires and other emergencies in the rural area.
Vanzant community gathers for 59th annual picnic
The Eastern Douglas County Volunteer Fire Department, like most rural fire departments, operates with the help of member dues, donations and fundraisers. A recent fundraiser resulted in West Plains area resident Joseph Hickey, right, winning a $1,500 gift card from Mountainside Outfitters. Assistant Fire Chief and Public Information Officer Roy Crouch, left, thanked everyone who bought tickets for the giveaway and for their ongoing support. He added the proceeds from the drawing went toward purchasing new software for the fire station and will help first responders work more efficiently.

Rape and first-degree sexual abuse charges against Leonard D. Banks, 65, of Gainesville, have been dismissed by the state and Douglas County Prosecutor Matthew Weatherman, according to court records. more
Gainesville man sentenced to 15 years in 1989 murder cold case
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday via social media that Leonard D. Banks, 65, Gainesville, has entered an Alford plea to voluntary manslaughter related to the 1989 murder of Kellie Ann Workman, who disappeared from the Pleasant Ridge church cemetery in Douglas County exactly 36 years ago to the day.  more
