Excitement is building as the April 8 total solar eclipse approaches, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the Ozarks. Leonardo DRS, Inc., of West Plains, has once again stepped up in support of Lady Zizzer Basketball by donating an item for live auction during halftime of the Varsity Pink Out Game, set for Thursday at West Plains High School. Donated was a pink Bogg Bag beach bag, filled with items including Bogg koozies and a pink blanket. Thanks to the generous donation by DRS, all proceeds raised from this item during the live auction will be donated directly to the Ozarks Healthcare Cancer Treatment Center. A search warrant executed by West Plains police Jan. 23 on Allen Street reportedly resulted in the discovery of about 40 grams of suspected meth and 260 pills believed to be cut with fentanyl. Two people were arrested on drug trafficking charges.

Southern Bank has donated $1,200 as a tasting glass sponsor to the West Plains Council on the Arts’ 11th annual BrewFest. The event will be held 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 24 at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St. Advance tickets are $30 each through Ticketmaster, or $40 at the door; attendees must be at least 21 years of age with photo identification. Advance tickets may also be purchased in person at Dev's Steakhouse on Court Square, Wages Brewing Company in East Towne Village off of Bill Virdon Boulevard or at the civic center box office, or by phone by calling the box office at 417-256-8087. The event is a fundraiser for the arts council, and proceeds will help fund the Gatewood Family Fine Arts Scholarship, art exhibits, workshops, the annual Community Messiah Sing, performances and the Old-Time Music, Ozarks Heritage Festival. West Plains R-7 Board votes to keep early-release Fridays on schedule
West Plains R-7 school board members voted on Jan. 16 to continue with early-release Fridays for the foreseeable future after weighing the pros and cons, including bringing the district's calendar more in line with surrounding rural K-8 schools and the likelihood of teachers would losing lesson planning and collaboration time if early-release Fridays were eliminated. more

Freezing rain closes schools, businesses one last time before forecast warm-up
One last round of wintry precipitation — this time, freezing rain — associated with an Arctic front that moved into the area Jan. 12, caused another round of cancellations by the majority of area schools on Monday, as well as local government buildings and several businesses. more

West Plains Elementary School fourth grade teacher Angela Phipps, right, was named the Greater West Plains Area Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year during the chamber’s annual awards banquet held Thursday evening at the civic center. The award was presented by Missouri State University-West Plains Chancellor Dennis Lancaster, who praised Phipps' caring and accommodation of her students' unique learning needs, her ability to inspire youngsters through enthusiasm and praise, and her efforts to communicate with parents. Phipps was nominated for the honor by her coworkers, students and other community members, and was also named the 2023 Educator of the Year by the West Plains R-7 School District. Photos of sun pillars have been popping up on social media the past few days, as air temperatures plummeted and winter precipitation moved in. The phenomenon, shown here from a vantage point off of Independence Drive in West Plains, is related to the same conditions that cause sun dogs or halos around the sun or moon, the interaction of sunlight or moonlight with ice crystals in the atmosphere, according to the National Weather Service. Sun pillars happen at sunrise or sunset, when the sun is low on the horizon, and are a reflection of the light off of ice crystals related to cirrus clouds, the NWS says. Sun dogs and halos, on the other hand, are a refraction of light similar to when white light passes through a prism and can sometimes create a rainbow effect.

A Jan. 10 law enforcement search of a home on the 300 block of West Maple Street in West Plains reportedly turned up a variety of controlled substances including meth, psilocybin mushrooms, hydromorphone hydrochloride, methadone, Clonazepam, Adderall, tramadol hydrochloride, Alprazolam and Lorazepam. About $3,000 in cash was also seized during the event, as well as two rifles, a shotgun and a handgun, plus ammunition, police said.

Two people have been charged after a narcotics warrant was served Jan. 10 at a home on the 300 block of West Maple Street in West Plains, resulting in the seizure of drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine and other illegal controlled substances, a large amount of cash, and guns, say police. more
